63rd Primetime Emmy Awards - My Picks

Ok, so it’s Emmy’s time again and I thought I’d offer my picks.  I watch far more American television than I do British, and it’s no secret amongst those who know me that I would give either (both? Not possible? Ok) kidney to write and produce an original show for HBO or AMC (maybe Showtime… if it was Dexter budget).  American television just seems to do everything so well - cinematic visuals, story-lines that compel and bring fresh dramatic scenarios to the small screen series after series, and incredibly talented actors, many of whom are stars of Hollywood status in their own right.

That said, here are my picks from this year’s list of nominees, of all the big ones that I really care about (sorry, hairstyling. Maybe next time):

Outstanding Cinematography For A Single-Camera Series - Stuart Dryburgh, ASC, Director of Photography (Boardwalk Empire)

Outstanding Cinematography For A Miniseries Or Movie - David Moxness, C.S.C, Director of Photography (The Kennedys)

Outstanding Cinematography For Nonfiction Programming - Cliff Charles, Director of Photography (If God Is Willing And Da Creek Don’t Rise)

Outstanding Cinematography For Reality Programming - The team behind ‘Deadliest Catch’

Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series - Tim Van Patten - (Game of Thrones - Pilot)

*NOTE - This one is super tough. Of course Scorcese is a legend, and ‘Boardwalk Empire’ was brilliantly done, but have I really enjoyed it more than ‘Game of Thrones’ or ‘The Killing’? I’d say in terms of managing an ensemble cast, the pilot of ‘Game of Thrones’ was a breathtaking piece of direction. Each actor was handled perfectly and gave you a real insight into who the main characters to watch would be. The direction of the series overall has been patchy, but it was a superb pilot.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series - Louis C.K. as Louis (Louis)

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series - Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope (Parks & Rec)

*NOTE - Sorry, Laura Linney. Yes you are an excellent actress, but ‘The Big C’ has been so hit and miss for me. It had so much potential but I just find it grating. At this point I’m only watching for the all-too-infrequent appearances of Marlene, the best thing in the show, so of course the first character they killed :(

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series - Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan (Dexter)

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series - Mireille Enos as Sarah Linden (The Killing)

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series - Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)

*NOTE - Seriously… if Dinklage doesn’t win I will eat an SD card. I seriously will. It’s the modern day equivalent of Herzog’s boot. Also, who the hell nominated Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder in Justified? He makes me want to off myself. What a terribly written character.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series - Kelly Macdonald as Margaret Schroeder (Boardwalk Empire)

Outstanding Comedy Series - Parks And Recreation

Outstanding Drama Series - Game Of Thrones

Outstanding Reality - Competition Program - Top Chef

*NOTE - For real, Emmys? You’re going to nominate American Idol and not The Voice - home to my beloved Dia Frampton? How about screw you guys. This better be a scheduling/release date thing or we are through!

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series - Louie • Poker/Divorce by Louis C.K.

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series - The Killing • Pilot by Veena Sud
